Breaking Glass With Sound

If you do this with sufficient volume, the glass will try to move in its vibration farther and faster than the material in the glass is able to move, and the glass will break under the strain.”

Phil Spector’s Wall Of Sound

The Wall of Sound is a music production technique for pop and rock music recordings developed by record producer Phil Spector at Gold Star Studios during the 1960s. Spector, working with audio engineers such as Larry Levine , created a dense, layered, and reverberant sound that reproduced well on AM radio and jukeboxes popular in the era. He created this sound by having a number of electric and acoustic guitarists perform the same parts in unison, adding musical arrangements for large groups of musicians up to the size of orchestras, and then recording the sound using an echo chamber .

They are using the “Focus Point” speaker system manufactured by soundtube.com.

“120years.net charts the development of electronic musical instruments from 1870 to 1990. For the purposes of this project electronic musical instruments are defined as instruments that synthesise sounds from an electronic source. This definition leaves out a whole section of hybrid electronic instruments developed at the end of the last century that used electronics to manipulate or amplify sounds and tape recorders, wax recording devices, Musique Concrete and so-on. It has been decided to leave in some non electronic instruments such as the Futurists “Intonarumori” due to their importance in the history of and influence on modern music.”

“The Voder: It’s probably best to think of this machine as the direct ancestor of the vocoder , both in name and technology. Driving the sound generation were two sources, one sending out white noise, and the other a relaxation oscillator producing sort of a vocal cordbuzz. ”

“Invented by H. W. Dudley of Bell Labs in 1939, this machine (a particular model nicknamed Pedro, the Voder , in fact) was debuted at the World’s Fairs of 1939 in New York and 1940 in San Fransisco. Operators had to train up to a year (!) to play the machines well enough for the speech to be intelligible. ”
