He created this sound by having a number of electric and acoustic guitarists perform the same parts in unison, adding musical arrangements for large groups of musicians up to the size of orchestras, and then recording the sound using an <a id="aptureLink_qQ9hmZAD23" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Echo%20chamber">echo chamber</a> .</p>

For the purposes of this project <a id="aptureLink_jnePgPYAoi" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electronic%20musical%20instrument">electronic musical instruments</a> are defined as instruments that synthesise sounds from an electronic source. This definition leaves out a whole section of hybrid electronic instruments developed at the end of the last century that used electronics to manipulate or amplify sounds and tape recorders, <a id="aptureLink_9R04AwBXwk" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dictaphone">wax recording devices</a>, <a id="aptureLink_D4l8z12kCI" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Musique%20concr%C3%A8te">Musique Concrete</a> and so-on. <p>&#8220;Invented by H. W. Dudley of <a id="aptureLink_XDAGrotXON" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bell%20Labs">Bell Labs</a> in 1939, this machine (a particular model nicknamed <a id="aptureLink_1iXmrM8WfG" href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0007JYC62?tag=soubraaudbras-21">Pedro, the Voder</a> , in fact) was debuted at the <a id="aptureLink_vS59qgXo8B" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1939%20New%20York%20World%27s%20Fair">World&#8217;s Fairs of 1939 in New York</a> and 1940 in San Fransisco. Operators had to train up to a year (!) to play the machines well enough for the speech to be intelligible. &#8221;</p>
